Alicante

Returning from Bangkok and immersing myself in street photography there has left me struggling to focus. I’ve been unable to shoot, yet my first hour back in Alicante, my hidden muse, I was shooting and everything clicked. Alicante possesses a profound power over me; from the moment I leave the airport, I feel like a new person. All my troubles are left behind in the terminal, and I feel alive, relaxed and happy. No other place on Earth has ever offered this feeling. The bus ride into the city is intoxicating, and by the time I step off, I’m calm and unable to stop smiling.

My three days in Alicante weren’t without challenges. My health faltered, and I ended up in hospital on my second day, unable to walk. So, I spent most of that day resting by the beach, which was incredibly relaxing. Despite this setback and the pain I endured, I couldn’t stop smiling. Back home, this would bother me immensely and leave me feeling low for days, but it never happens when I’m in Alicante. Perhaps the weather plays a significant role in my mood, but I’m not certain, as I’ve been there when it’s been raining and somewhat cold, yet it never bothered me like it does here at home. There’s simply something about the city; it’s open and welcoming, much like the people.

I dedicated my first and last days to street photography, and as always, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Alicante is a small quiet city, which is what I love about it. Busy cities like Barcelona are too distracting, with more happening but harder to focus on. Alicante strikes the perfect balance; there’s not much happening, yet there are plenty of opportunities for a street photographer.

I relish finding a good café, sitting outside and waiting for moments to unfold around me. I can’t walk like I used to and need to be careful, or these trips will have to end. If I lose the ability to travel to Alicante, I honestly have no idea what will happen to me. Alicante has become my lifeline; booking trips there is helping my mental health more than any medication ever could.

I have two trips booked for Sitges in March and May and another trip booked for Alicante this coming April, and I can’t wait.

Time for some photos.
