Despite feeling apprehensive about speaking to a large audience, I delivered two talks to photo groups this past week. I experienced initial anxiety and dizziness before each presentation but was able to overcome these feelings.
I was invited to speak to MCP (Manchester Photo Collective) in Manchester. The in-person talk was particularly challenging, with anxiety manifesting as chest pains. Fortunately, I had friends present to offer support and speaking with Lee, John and James beforehand helped me relax. While it was initially unsettling to be watched and listened to, I gradually became more comfortable. I did have negative thoughts and kept looking at the door but I persevered.
The talk was well-received, with attendees expressing enjoyment of my presentation. I was particularly pleased to discuss my mental health struggles and their impact on my daily life.
Similarly, my online talk with Paul at Photoclub247 was a positive experience. Paul created a welcoming atmosphere and I received numerous encouraging comments from the audience, which made me feel honoured and humble.
Although I am not naturally inclined towards public speaking, my therapist advised me that these talks would help me build confidence and demonstrate my worth. With great trepidation, I undertook both presentations which I thoroughly enjoyed and my therapist was correct; I was able to inspire others.
I would like to thank everyone for listening and attending both talks.
If you live in the Manchester area I’d like to recommend MCP (Manchester Photo Collective), they are relaxed and very welcoming.
You can also join Photoclub247 online and like the Manchester group I can’t recommend them enough.
