I stumbled upon the charming Spanish town of Sitges in 2025 and instantly fell in love with it. This past week, I was there for the fourth time this year, and this time I got to know lots of the locals thanks to my good friend Thomas, whom I met on my last visit. Thomas is a photographer who has worked in and around Sitges for over 20 years.
There’s a bar/restaurant in Sitges called the Nieuwe Amsterdam that my wife and I have always wanted to try, but each time we’ve walked past, it’s been busy and loud, not somewhere I’d be comfortable with, but this time the bar had just opened, and we entered in. What a place! It’s amazing. The bar is run by Michael, and in 2027, it would’ve been open for 60 years. It was opened by Michael’s parents, and it’s named after a cruise ship his parents worked and met on. How cool is that? The food is incredible, the company outstanding and welcoming, there’s surfing on the TV’s which is relaxing to watch. Michael and I got talking about movies like Point Break and the music in the film, and he played the soundtrack in the bar, so cool and thank you so much, Michael.
I also got to meet up with Mijiu, a beach volleyballer whom I met on one of my last visits, and it was amazing to catch up with him and to meet Yesika, who was also playing on the beach. I have to say that everyone was so welcoming, and this was just what I needed after weeks of being in hospital and going through the bad times I’ve been faced with. So to escape to a place that is like a slice of heaven was the best thing that could’ve happened to me.
On our last night, Thomas took my wife and me to a local bar called Bar Baron, which opened in 1968. We were welcomed with open arms, and my wife soon settled in, getting to know everyone. I had a blast taking photos of the locals that night, and again, I felt like I’d been going there for years.
I’ll never forget our last night in Sitges; it was truly wonderful.
Both my wife and I had an amazing week in Sitges, and I really can’t wait to go back and see all our new friends.
