The Year of the Dragon

2024 is the year of the dragon and the first time I’d seen the Chinese new year celebrations in Liverpool and I have to say they pull out all the stops. I’ve been to many of the new year celebrations in London and yet Liverpool’s celebrations go on for 3 days.

I had no idea that Liverpool Chinatown is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe, the iconic Chinese Ceremonial archway into Chinatown is incredible and I highly recommend checking it out if you visit the city.

Sunday marked the grand finale which I didn’t want to miss, the trouble for me was the crowds of people and as I’ve said before I don’t enjoy shooting events, when my wife and I arrived we spent time just watching and enjoying the dragons etc before I started taking photos. For the most part I stayed to the edges not putting myself into the crowd as my anxiety wouldn’t be able to cope with it.

I also find that I get better photos around the event itself self and most photographers seem to send their time shooting the events that are happening where I like to focus on the people watching and I got some photos that I was really happy with and I can’t wait for next year.
