Isolation in the Digital Age

The tech companies are always telling us that the digital world brings us closer together, and it’s all about connection, but do any of us truly believe this? Please be honest with yourself when answering. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to call BS on that.

Since starting this project, all I’ve noticed is isolation: people sitting alone plugged into the matrix. Even when people are sitting with friends or family, nobody is connected, and the only time they look up is if they want to show the other person something on their digital device, and then it’s back to ignoring each other. More and more, we’re becoming a society of loners. What will the human race’s trajectory look like in ten years?

Ten years ago, coffeehouses served as venues for human connection, today they have become places of isolation.

This digital isolation is not only a source of social disconnection but also a significant contributor to the rise in mental health issues and obesity. Individuals often consume unhealthy food and drink alone, stressed by content displayed on their devices. Social media has become a powerful influence that has humanity by the balls.

As long as we keep believing the lie from all the tech companies, we’ll never wake up from this dystopian nightmare that we’re all living in, and we’ll just keep getting more and more isolated.

I have included photographs that illustrate this phenomenon. The first photo is of a mother and daughter who hadn’t seen each other in ages (yes, I overheard them). They spent the first five minutes saying how much they were happy to see each other, and then they spent the next 30 minutes ignoring each other while focused on their phones. Look at the photo and tell me if they look happy.
